Why do New Yorkers / New York drivers honk their horns all the time ?

I recently moved to new york and found that the drivers here are the rudest people I have ever seen. They tailgate, they honk their horns all the time, they are impatient and very very rude on the road. They never signal when they are making turns, and they think they own the road. Why?
