Can someone explain a external ventricular drainage to me?

My friend is having this done sometime tomorrow to help relieve pressure on her brain because of fluid I believe. I've found a few things on it, but nothing too helpful. I also have a few simple questions, like how long is recovery, how long is it generally in for, and what happens after. Thanks.
