Removing Asphalt Brick Shingles from house?

What is the best method or process to following in removing the asphalt brike like shingles from the side of my 1912 house in Portland, Or. ? Underneather appears to be old growth fir T/G lap type siding that could be worth keeping and refinishing (painting)
